P. H. Stockill
Plant hire & Agricultural contractor.
In 1910 Harry & Lizzie Stockill moved to Broad Head to manage the farm on behalf of the owners Mr. & Mrs. Illingworth of Wydale Hall. Eventually Harry was given the opportunity to be the Tenant & farm on his own behalf.
Broad Head had about 100 acres grass & arable land and 100 acres rough grazing on the moor. Horses were used for all the land work. Sidney & Alfred were the two sons helping at home, but there was not enough income to provide a decent living.
Sidney went to work for a cousin & her husband - Jenny & Billy Ruston at Givendale Head. Eventually having saved enough money Sidney returned to join Alfred at Broad Head & together they took over the tenancy.
Sidney bought a Ford Tractor on ‘spade lugs’ with which to carry out contracting work, in order to augment the income from the farm. This tractor had been transferred from blue paint to green prior to its arrival on the farm as it was common for German planes to machine gun workers in the field.
Sidney also bought a car to take children from the out lying farms to the school in Ebberston, thus creating another source of income.
Harry Stockill is the eldest son of Sidney and moved from Cockmoor Hall Farm to Snainton in 1973 and started the Plant Hire side of the business.
A family business with over 40 years experience in the Agricultural Contracting, Civil Engineering and Plant Hire sector.
The most attractive site in the midst of a working farm in the heart of North Yorkshire.
